Last November (2004), at a barmitzvah party, Jeremy was asked what
it would take to cut his long, dark pony tail (unusual for a lawyer
and baal koreh of a certain age!)
He replied: "If someone were to donate $20,000 towards the
refurbishment of the synagogue in Lvov I would be happy to cut it".
It was a ridiculous idea, quite preposterous. Who would pay that
sort of money for an old man's 3-year-old pony-tail?
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a gentleman sitting
at the same table shouted out: "Done!"
A contract was hastily drawn up. The conditions were that Jeremy
should cut his hair on Lag B'omer - when 3 year old boys traditionally
have their first hair cut - and that the money should be used towards
the new project to restore the beautiful synagogue in our twin community
of Lvov.
The cheque arrived in January. Having banked it there was no going
back.
Thus on Lag B'omer (24th May 2005) in the elegant garden of Miriam
& Lloyd Kingsley and in the presence of 70 guests and paparazzi
, Jeremy's locks were duly shorn by society hairdresser, Neville
of Knightsbridge.
To the amusement of the assembled guests Neville commenced his
attack with a pair of garden shears - reverting to traditional scissors
and comb only after the bulk of Jeremy's once-flowing locks lay
forlorn on the ground.
We extend our grateful thanks to all of those who contributed to
the success of the evening.
